Julieta HernandezEIF Higher Education Advisor
Julieta Hernandez is part Mother Hen, part teen to her students at North Dallas High. The kids talk to her about FAFSA just as freely as they’ll tell her about their problems. It’s a role that suits her well; Julieta flows back and forth, from professional to pseudo-parent, freely and it’s obvious why she chose psychology as her major in college. Growing up in Del Rio, Texas, Julieta was schooled both in the U.S. and Mexico, so she especially identifies with the issues and worries of her immigrant students on several levels.
Where did you go to college? I received my Associate’s Degree from Richland College and my Bachelor’s Degree from UTD in psychology
What was your first roommate like? I did not live on campus. I lived with my family.
Favorite quote or motto? “Minds are like parachutes: they only function when open.”
What’s the biggest benefit you see kids get out of EIF? Giving them exposure to opportunities: scholarships, college access, life skills, networking, etc. I also think that we are giving them training; they are becoming college-access experts themselves. I have heard them encourage their friends to go to college and have seen them help others with college and scholarship applications. Pay it forward.
