Chesapeake Energy said Thursday that Fort Worth and Dallas raised $1.25 million for a local college scholarship fund, matching an initial $1.25 million donation from the company and triggering a second donation of the same amount.
At the same time, Chesapeake announced it awarded two scholarships for the coming school year to students from Fort and Dallas.
"Because of the cities' fundraising success, the scholarship fund now totals more than $3.75 million and is available to help qualified students from both Fort Worth and Dallas attend the college or vocational school of their choice," Chesapeake said.
The Chesapeake Scholarship Fund will benefit minority and socially disadvantaged youth, and Chesapeake said the fund's awards Thursday were for up to $20,000 apiece.
The scholarships awarded Thursday went to Diana Serrano, valedictorian of North Side High School in Fort Worth, and Latodria Hartford, who attends James Madison High School in Dallas. Serrano plans to attend TCU in the fall, where she won a partial scholarship and will receive an additional $12,500 Chesapeake Fund scholarship. She is vice chair of the Youth Advisory Board in Fort Worth.
Hartford is third in her class and captain of her basketball team. She will use her $13,800 Chesapeake Fund scholarship at the University of Houston, where she will study pharmacy.
